FAQs for Proportionate Points Average System

What is the Proportionate Points Average system?

A: The Proportionate Points Average system is a new formula designed to calculate average points for teams of different sizes on a Street Tag leaderboard.

The system divides the total points earned by a team by the number of registered players to calculate the team's average score, which determines their leaderboard position.

Why is the formula not done as total points earned divided by the number of active players that have scored a point?

A: We have not taken this approach due to the high additional cost of thousands of pounds that it will cost to enable additional large server space for the Street Tag app to run on. By using the number of active players, this will mean every so often with thousands of players opening the app, the app in realtime needs to ping our server thousands of times daily to do real-time calculations that factor in who’s active in other to give an accurate live leaderboard positioning. To save cost, we have kept it simple: we divide the total points earned by a team by the number of registered players to calculate the team's average score in real-time, which determines their leaderboard position. With this approach, each team can ensure that all players in their team are supported and encouraged to be active and to contribute to their team. And inactive players can temporarily exit the team if required.

Why is the Proportionate Points Average system introduced?

A: The funder of the project e.g. local authority partner or our Active Partnership partner that is funding the leaderboard gives the consent for the average scoring to be turned on for the individual leaderboard. This typically includes prior feedback from individuals or schools that have raised the request for an average scoring leaderboard.

Is the Proportionate Points Average system permanent?

A: No, it is not permanent. If the majority feedback/vote after a season with the Proportionate Points Average system is that the previous leaderboard ranking is better after the new experience, the old leaderboard ranking can be turned back on. Feedback at the end of the season will be shared with the funders of the leaderboards. In the meantime, it is worth giving the Proportionate Points Average system a good go to experience the difference.

Will there ever be further optimisation to the Proportionate Points Average system?

A: This might be likely in the future as we log and combine various feedback at the end of the leaderboard seasons that are running the Proportionate Points Average system.

Can you provide an example of how this system works?

A: See the examples provided below for a clear demonstration of how the Proportionate Points Average system works.

School A team has 20 registered players with a total score of 180,000 points.

Average score: 180,000/20 = 9,000, determining the school's leaderboard position.

School B team with 66 registered players with a total score of 90,000 points.

Average score: 90,000/66 = 1,363, determining the school's leaderboard position.

School C, like School B, has 66 registered players and a total score of 180,000 points.

Average score: 180,000/66 = 2,727, determining the school's leaderboard position.

Ranking will be:

1st School A

2nd School C

3rd School B

Example 2:

Community Team A with 6 registered players with a total score of 180,000 points.

Average score: 180,000/6 = 30,000, determining the community team's leaderboard position.

Community Team B with 2 registered players with a total score of 90,000 points.

Average score: 90,000/2 = 45,000, determining the community team's leaderboard position.

Community Team C with 4 registered players with a total score of 183,150 points.

Average score: 183,150/4 = 45,787, determining the community team's leaderboard position.

Ranking will be:

1st Community Team C

2nd Community Team B

3rd Community Team A

How does the ranking work with this system?

A: Teams are ranked based on their average scores, with higher average scores resulting in higher positions on the leaderboard.

What if my team has a smaller number of registered players?

A: The system accounts for team size, so even smaller teams can achieve higher positions if they have a competitive average score.

What's the goal of this system?

A: The goal is to ensure that all players in a team contribute to their team's performance, and the system rewards higher average scores.

Will this system be implemented in all competitions and leaderboards?

A: No. The implementation of the Proportionate Points Average system will vary for the leaderboards, as per the approval from our local authority and active partnerships.

Note:

Teams must have a minimum of 4 players to be considered for the prizes on the AVERAGE scoring leaderboards of CUMBRIA.

Teams must have a minimum of 15 players to be considered for the prizes on the AVERAGE scoring SCHOOL leaderboards.
